Sew Night with Kass- burp cloths for Sophie

I wanted to show you the project that Kass and I did on last weeks sew night. Burp cloths for our little Sophie Belle. For those of you who don't know, Sophie is my grandaughter! She is almost 7 weeks old now and doing very well after being born premature. She was 4 lbs. & 13 oz.at birth, now she's a little chunk!
I had so much fun dressing up premade dishcloths that I thought I would give it a whirl with premade diapers. I hadn't seen these before but my friend Linda saw some at a boutique and told me about them. Of course we decided to add ric-rac to ours because thats how we roll!

We used all fabrics from my stash and leftover ric-rac from several previous projects. This one is my favorite. I had a little of this fabric leftover from pillowcases that I made for Kassidys first bed when she grew out of her crib.

This one is Kassidy's favorite and of course, why not? It's sock monkey fabric like Sophie's first quilt.

Of course we did one with polka dots. HELLLLOOOOO? Do you think we could resist? Ric-rac and polka dots are project staples in my studio.

We bought premade cloth diapers at Target. We bought a half dozen and brought them home to stitch up on Wednesday while the boys were away.

Kassidy stitched the ric-rac on using the stitching line already on the diapers as a guide. She went slow and did a fabulous job!

I cut the fabric 1/2" bigger all the way around and turned it under, topstitching as I went around all 4 sides. We only dressed up one side of the diaper and left the other side plain.

This ric-rac went on top because it is smaller than the others and we wanted to be sure it showed.

We easily completed them in one night. About 3 hours total give or take, Dr. Pepper, popcorn and American Idol time...fun fun FUN:)

We added them to our stash of things to give to Sophie. What can we make her next? Does anyone have any quick project ideas that would be suitable for another sew night with Kassidy?

Those little burp cloths are the prettiest I've ever seen! Kassi is turning into "the seamstress"! How about little panties to put over diapers when she wears a dress? 2 piece pattern, with casings for elastic. Nadine sells a cute little pants pattern that is really easy to sew, really easy. It is called "Britches and Bloomers" by Jackie Clark, sizes newborn to 4T. Nadine sells it. It is fun choosing fabric and ruffles that coordinate and it would be really cute with ric rac trim.

These are so cute and very clever! I love, Love, LOVE the one with the vintage-y looking flower girls! Too stinkin' cute! I have to file this idea away for when I am a Grandma, or these would make darling shower gifts too!

Hello, I have a new grandbaby due end of June, early July and I have been having a great time making things for her. You might try ruffly ribbon socks. Buy good baby socks and ribbon, sew the ribbon on while stretching the sock and when done they make a lovely ruffle. I have made a pair to match every dress I bought her. So much fun!

Cute! I make mine with a flannel panel down the center. Never thought of rick rack. Rick rack makes everything prettier! My daughter was born 23 years ago, full-term, tipping the scales at 4 lbs. 15 oz. She's still tiny.

Lori, I LOVE them! Thanks for such a cute and quick idea! I tended my nieces brand new baby last week. She brought her in the baby carrier. She had the cutest cover for it. It was just a square of fabric, about 2.5 or 3 feet square. She had sewn two vintage colored fabrics back to back. Then in the middle she had sewn two strips of fabric that each velcroed together into a loop. These loops went over the handle of the carrier and made such a nice sun cover! On the straps she had big bows of fabric and ribbon. SO CUTE!

How cute - and I think it's so neat that you and Kassidy have a sew night! You are piling up the memories for both her and you! When I had my babies - getting close to 60 years ago now - we just used a clean diaper for a burp cloth. No huggies or pampers back then! Nothing smelled as good as a diaper washed in Ivory Flakes and hung outside to dry! However, I must say I would not be anxious to return to that although some moms may to keep the earth green. Enjoy your sewing with your little girl!!

This is cute. I've seen them before and thought of making them but had no real reason. Now that my daughter is pregnant - I have a reason! She thinks it is a girl. We'll find out in 2 weeks a better idea when she is 20 weeks. These turned out so cute. They would make a good shower gift too. Love this idea. Go Target. It reminds me of buying a mix cake and dressing it up.

They turned out so cute! I think small baby quilt with 9-patches would be doable...you've definitely got a future quilter in training!

Those are so cute! I love all the fabrics you chose. I have done some with minky in the past--they are so soft and are actually pretty absorbant. I think you should get Sophie some headbands and start making bows and flowers for her :)

Lori
fleece is soo forgiving and you can make some cute pillows in animal shapes or a block or ball with the top pulled together like a yo-yo and the extra ends sticking out so little can grab on to later for play.
too much fun

What a fun project for you and your daughter to make for Sophie Belle. I'm sure they will be used and loved. She'll be stylin, that's for sure!

I think you could probably make Sophie some headbands or some really cute little skirts.

I have to share, My little grand-daughters name is Kora Belle. It's my favorite name and I'm glad my daughter named her Kora. It fits her so perfectly. She's a little strawberry blond, too! It's so fun being a grammi. You will continue to just love it!!!

Those burp cloths are a terrific idea! How cute they turned and what a nice thing to have in the diaper bag.
That baby is adorable. No wonder you can't stop taking pictures of those little feet. :-)

A few ideas from this site http://www.make-baby-stuff.com/index.html
This might be a simple one for your little helper http://www.newconceptions.com/patpdf/bibspdf.pdf or these http://www.sewing.org/html/washpuppet.html
Lots of variety here http://www.makeforbaby.com/index.php
That should keep the two of you busy for a few nights, and yes I'm a soon to be grandma so I have loads of pattern sites saved.

Thanks for the adorable idea - I made 22 burp cloths yesterday and this morning to give away to friends having babies this fall! We are expecting our first boy after two girls so I made some "boyish" ones! So much fun! I will keep checking for more ideas - love it! My daughter is excited to get her own machine - she loved that your daughter received one at 9 - she is almost 7 so just a few years to go!
